Starting at the beginning

When you initially open the app, you'll discover that it's split into two sections: Templates and Projects. Let's start with the former.

Templates are pre-made projects that come complete with music, titles, and transitions, ready for you to add your footage.

The ones on the main page are the most popular, but touch on'more' to see all the templates available. There are twenty of them, divided into categories like Food, Fashion, and Festival; however, only four of them are free, and it's no surprise that the four most popular templates are among them.

You'll have to become pro (which we'll discuss later) if you want to utilize the others.

All templates, whether free or premium, may be previewed to give you an idea of what you'll get. After you've made your decision, you'll need to decide which clips to utilize.

At the bottom of the screen, you'll see how many clips you'll need and how long each one should be. This makes selecting acceptable material from your available footage a breeze.

And, while you can't change the length of each clip, you may choose which parts of your video to utilize (don't worry if you forget this while making your film; you can always change it later).

After you've picked all of your clips, hit Go to import your footage into Filmora Go, which might take a few seconds.

You may then fine-tune your movie, albeit you only have a few options: you can change the default text, and you can modify each video to make sure the segment you want to use is the one that's picked, but that's all. Transitions, effects, and background music cannot be changed. It's also worth noting that all of the templates we've used produce a project in portrait mode, rather than the more common landscape format

Creating a project

If you want more control over your project, you should avoid using templates and start from scratch.

You get to choose the clips you want to utilize, much as in the Template part, albeit being able to cut the clips before inserting them is much more beneficial here, especially if your footage is extensive, but don't worry: you can change your mind afterwards.

Also, don't feel obligated to pick all of the clips you'll utilize all at once. During the creation process, you can add additional at any time.

Once you're in the editing section, you'll notice that you have a lot of options.

All of the tools you'll need are organized into nine menus at the bottom of the screen. For example, if you tap on 'Trim,' that menu will be replaced with another, containing all tools for altering a selected clip. Trim, divide, duplicate it, modify its volume, rotate it, change its opacity, speed, and even make a freeze frame with it. You've been nicely taken care of.

You may also render your film by dragging a certain clip along the timeline.

You may also utilize other menus to add music and sound effects to your project (you can connect to the tracks stored on your phone, or use the ones supplied by Filmora Go).
Text editing is more powerful than it appears, allowing you to change the font and color, add a drop shadow or outline, and even apply motion effects to it. We loved being able to change its size, location, and rotation with standard gestures.

You may also use a number of animated stickers, albeit you don't have any control over their look, only their size and placement on the screen.

What's wonderful to notice is that these additions to your project don't seem as embedded clips in your film; instead, they appear as floating clips that you can relocate and even change the duration of at whim.

Filters allow you to apply pre-set color corrections to a single clip or your whole project. There is just one free preset (Landscape), while the other two (Cyberpunk and Black & White) are available for purchase in the Store. Consider them Instagram filters, but with a much smaller color pallet.

If these alternatives are too limited for you, the Adjust menu will come in handy. These tools let you change most of the properties you'd want to deal with on your video, such as saturation, brightness, and contrast, and more than make up for the Filters' lack of options.

The Effects menu has a small number of effects (12 to be exact) that are meant to alter your video in some way. We considered these alternatives to be extremely severe, and because there appears to be no way to change their parameters, we thought this was a very restricted and unsatisfactory offering.

One thing to keep in mind: these effects, like the text and stickers, are distinct from your video, and you may change them about to fit your needs, even over numerous recordings.

You can only work with a single layer of video in Filmora Go, but there is a PiP (picture in picture) option that allows you to place a clip over another (or a range of others), resize it, and relocate it wherever on the timeline.

The final choice is Canvas, which allows you to customize the general format of your project. This is based on the clips you've provided by default, but you may change it to one of five alternative ratios: 1:1, 4:5, 16:9, 9:16, and 5:4.

You may resize your footage to cover the screen and reposition it to display the area of the movie you want to focus on if you choose a format that doesn't match the dimensions of your clips.

If you wind up with back bars at the edge of your canvas, you may replace them with a color of your choice or an exquisite blur effect, which is now all the rage.

Exporting

The export method is the same whether you used a Template or started from scratch when making a movie.

You may post your work on social networking sites like Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook once you're finished. You may also save it to your camera roll or distribute it to your friends and family via messaging, mail, or other methods.

Please keep in mind that if you use the free app, your movie will be watermarked, with a large 'Filmora Go' showing at the very end. You may only export at a maximum resolution of 1280x720 pixels (or 720x1280 depending of your chosen orientation). If you upgrade to Pro, all of these restrictions will be lifted.

Go pro Pro is a membership service that gives you access to all of the premium features available, with the promise of more being added in the future to sweeten the bargain. The watermark is removed quickly, and you have the option to export your work in 1080p (but no higher - a 4K option would be welcome).

You may pay either $6 (£4.99) each month or $38 (£29.49) for the entire year (which includes a 3 day free trial so you can test all the features out before committing).

If you enjoy what you see, you can pay $63 (£48.99) for a one-time purchase that gives you unlimited access to all features for the rest of your life.

Store

There's also the Store if none of this appeals to you. This is more of an a la carte offer, where you can pick and choose the things you want and ignore the rest.

You can, for example, remove the watermark for $5 (£3.99) or unlock the 1080P export option for $4 (£2.99), and you can scan through all of the available packs - but, except from the two filters listed above, they're all for more stickers, which is disappointing.

The final word

The editing capabilities are fantastic, and the template section allows you to make a fast movie in seconds. We enjoy the possibility of being able to pick the type of setting in which you want to work. The app is let down by the small amount of additional features available in the shop, which makes purchasing a membership to this service less of an incentive, although this may change over time.
